Colombian Harpists visit the Cork Folk Festival.
12 young Colombian female traditional harpists will visit Ireland from 23 Sept to 2 October 2017 as an outcome of the Memorandum of Cooperation for Sport and Cultural Diplomacy signed during Ireland’s first State visit to Colombia in February 2017.
The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs created an initiative to foster sport and culture as tools to build peace, reconciliation, inclusion, peaceful coexistence and intercultural dialogue between children and adolescents affected by violence. The Ministry work with children aged 11 to 17 in the most marginalised communities, affected by violence and aim to promote leadership and commitment of young people with sport and culture as a lifestyle.
The girls from El Retorno (Guaviare) and Puerto Carreño (Vichada), in the Orinoquia region have dedicated their talents to music for years and as a reward get to make this international trip to Ireland to learn about Irish music and take workshops with young traditional Irish musicians and perform at their first Festival – Cork Folk Festival. Friday 29 Sept 1pm in Aula Maxima UCC & Sat 30 Sept 2pm Emmet Place Folk and Food.
They will learn about Irish music at UCC and CIT Cork School of Music, have workshops with local Irish musicians including Music Generation and the AiR Ensemble. See Video of the young musicians, who are from two small rural and remote localities.
